Weebly
INTRODUCTION
Weebly is an incredible (and free!) tool for teachers to use for creating a website. With an easy drag-and-drop interface, it will help you assemble a site in no time! Plan your content thinking about what kinds of information you want to make available and how you want to divide and present it. With those decisions made, Weebly will help you present your information in an attractive, organized, and professional-looking way.
The following sections, each containing at least one video tutorial, will walk you through the process. There's even more that's possible and yet not included here. I think there's enough below to help you produce something of which you can be proud!
Please don't hesitate to contact me with any questions. I am happy to help!
Enjoy!
REGISTRATION
Weebly is a free tool and only requires minimal information to register. The following video leads you through the registration process which is very quick and easy. By registering for an educator account here,
(Please note: This particular video was recorded earlier and the main screen has changed slightly since but the process itself remains the same. The rest of my "how to" videos in this lesson are all new and up-to-date. )
Below, you'll find a link to the Weebly address referenced in the video as well as a link to view the initial video on how to register.
SELECTING A THEME
Weebly offers many professional-looking templates. Choosing which one is the hardest part! Remember as you look at these that you can always change the pictures in each template and use your own, giving your a much more familiar and comfortable feel.
This video walks you through how to select a template and offers some help with a few other options in the initial setup process.
Remember that anything you select now can be changed later, if you want!
CUSTOMIZING YOUR HEADER
It's highly likely that you'll want to change the default picture in your theme. Find a picture you want to use and put it on our computer so you can upload it to your site. You'll be pleased to see your own pictures and students and parents will feel welcomed by seeing familiar faces.
You may want to double-check permission forms obtained at registration to make sure parents have signed off on including their child in an online site. Most, hopefully, will be thrilled to see pictures of their child!
Follow along in this video to learn how to make these changes that will add warmth to your website.
CREATING PAGES AND ADDING CONTENT
You're ready to create the structure to your site by adding pages. See how easily you can create a menu for your site that may even include pull-down menus!
Consider mapping out your thoughts ahead of time about how you want to divide and present your content. It's easy to change but some planning here will certainly pay dividends.
I split this into two videos as I got a little long-winded here.
ADDING LINKS
Links are pretty fundamental to any website. See how you can make a text, picture, and button link to a website (or other items!)
MAKING YOUR DOCUMENTS AVAILABLE
Weebly allows you to upload files and documents, making them readily available to your audience. This tutorial explains two different methods for providing your files.
Keep in mind that it's quite easy to link to a shared Google document, too, using the linking technique discussed in the previous video. The advantage of using a shared Google document is that when you make changes, users will see those changes immediately. The methods shown here are best used when posting a document that does not need regular updates. Even so, you could host all your documents in your Google account and link to them. Watch this nevertheless!
POSTING YOUR PICTURES
If you like to take pictures, Weebly offers your two outstanding ways to show them off through galleries and slideshows. Both are incredibly easy to create and they display the photos beautifully.
Start by putting the pictures you want to use in a gallery or show into a folder on your computer. You will upload them to Weebly and Weebly will make them look great!
OTHER TIDBITS (OPTIONAL)
There's more help at this site, if interested: http://help.weebly.com/beginners-guide.html
Weebly can help you create a VERY nice blog page (you've seen that option as one of the three choices when creating a new page.) If you have the desire/need to do this, check it out and let me know if I can help. It's really a very, very nice tool that works extremely well.
You can embed multimedia (video or slideshows created a other sites, for example) using the Custom HTML option. Again, ask if I can help you with this.
